Full Job Description

The Social Welfare Manager is responsible for the management and administration of the College Social Programme and for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students throughout their stay with Summer Boarding Courses. Leading a team of College Mentors, they will facilitate 24-hour supervision and support for students whilst managing the delivery of a vibrant, high-quality programme of activities and events.

The Social Welfare Manager is a vital member of our college management teams, and will need to be adept in supporting and directing staff, as well as students. A high level of communication, delegation and organisational skills is essential, as is experience working with, and supporting young people. They will model expected behaviours for the college, and will play a key part in developing the college community, ensuring that it is inclusive and welcoming to students and staff alike.

Remuneration: Paid weekly, one week in arrears. The weekly rate received for Social Welfare Managers is £850 plus any accrued holiday to be paid at the end of contract)

    Appealing to ambitious students wishing to prepare for future success and to gain an authentic taste of the studying at the prestigious University of Oxford. SBC Oxford College students undertake academic courses such as Medicine, Law, Business & Leadership, Computer Science, politics & Economics, Engineering and International Relations exploring their chosen subject through a series of engaging lectures, tutorials, and industry workshops. Their academic programme sits next to their social programme allowing them to explore Oxford, take part in college events, wellbeing activities and the greatly enjoyed excursion to London.SBC at Oxford College is based over Wadham College and St Hughs colleges each of which will have it's own staff team. Students on the college programme are 15-17 and the capacity is 160 students over both sites each week.

  • Main Duties:
  • Manage a team of College Mentors


  • Oversee the 24-hour supervision and monitoring of all students and the smooth running of the daily routine:

  • Support and direct staff to ensure a high level of positive interaction with students and the best possible student experience.

  • Coordinate the College Mentor team to carry out a 24-hour supervision rota to include wake-up, mealtimes, break times, free-time, evening meets and on call scheduling.

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with other members of the college management team to ensure the smooth running of the daily routine.

  • Ensure a thorough implementation of the sign-out, sign-in and remote supervision procedures during allocated free-time, as per SBCs policies & risk assessments.

  • Assume responsibility for the welfare and pastoral care of all students:

  • Be approachable and actively communicate with students around the College site in-order to better understand the needs of student body.

  • Recognise and respond to the individual needs of students, working closely with the management team to pre-empt and resolve welfare and pastoral issues.


  • Complete a First Aid course (arranged by SBC) and act as a college First Aider

  • Take Level 2 Safeguarding Course and act as Designated Safeguarding Officers (DSO) if required

  • Take responsibility for the administration of student medication

  • Assume overall responsibility for all evening activities at the college:

  • Following guidance from Head Office and drawing on the skills and ideas of the College Mentors, create & promote fortnightly programmes of evening events and activities.

  • Coordinate College Mentors to plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate the events and activities.

  • Prepare Risk Assessments and accurate registers for all evening events and activities.

  • Be present at evening events and activities, ensuring quality of delivery, monitoring student attendance and supporting staff, and where appropriate lead evening events.

  • Oversee the safe set-up and pack-down of all equipment & facilities. Ensure new stock is sourced efficiently.

  • Promote Student Voice on site:

  • Take responsibility for responding to all Student Feedback at the beginning and end of courses in-line with the Student Feedback Procedure.

  • Design and deliver further activities (appropriate to the site and age group), to gather additional student feedback such as Student Council, Noticeboards and Feedback Boxes.

  • Promote and embody standards of behaviour that we would expect from our staff and students

  • Be committed to the safeguarding and welfare of students in your care

  • Adhere to all Health and Safety measures (including COVID safety measures, risk assessments and other policies and procedures)

  • Go on excursions taking the role of Excursion Leader where necessary.

  • Liaise and help to ensure a positive working relationship with the host school staff team

  • Help with student transfers to and from the airport for any arrivals and departures

  • Be on call/overnight duty up to 6 times per week in case of emergency

  • You will provide the details of two recent and relevant referees who we will contact and specifically ask about your suitability to work with children and any concerns.

  • You will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS), and equivalent if you live, or have lived, outside of the UK

  • You will be asked to sign the Children's Act 1989 declaration safeguarding the welfare of children, and state that you have no known reason why you cannot work with children

  • Official identification and certificates will be required for our records
