Full Job Description

We're looking for an experienced Lead or Principal Engineer to join our team and own the ongoing development of our web and mobile applications alongside helping to develop our infrastructure and tooling.

This is our first onshore technical hire and we expect to expand the technical team further in the UK, which you will be responsible for.

You will lead our efforts to develop new features and get our infrastructure ready for scale.

Our APIs are built in C# and Node and our offshore developers will continue to support the development of the backend services with guidance from you.

We have some fairly significant projects coming up: implementing Terraform and IaC; building out our data storage solutions and optimising Azure (with the support of our 3rd party agency).

Right now we have one database in MySQL which is likely to be supplemented with further datalakes to maximise the commercial return from the valuable data we hold about our customers and their vehicles.

This is a role with a broad remit assuming some CTO responsibilities from the off, while assisting with hands-on development.

We offer flexible working hours and many staff choose to work 4 days per week with Fridays off. We are set up for you to deliver your best work remotely and we tend to meet up once a month in Birmingham.

First and foremost you must already have experience working as a Lead or Principal Engineer with significant ownership and influence over technical decisions.

It's crucial you understand backend architecture in C# or Node (ideally both) any front-end experience with React would also be useful.

You'll need to have worked on cloud platforms before and some of your past experience must have included Azure.

It's also important that you have previously used Terraform to build scalable infrastructure.

You must have a solid understanding of databases. We use MySQL but any previous SQL experience will be fine. You'll need to be able to write SQL queries and implement best practices across the large data sets we hold.

If you haven't built CI/CD pipelines from scratch before we'll want to hear how you deployed your code and any work you did to optimise pipelines in past roles.

You should be familiar with a range of testing approaches and be comfortable writing your own tests and collaborating with developers to help them improve theirs too.

We'll want to hear about the monitoring tools you have used and which metrics you found most useful to measure.

While your focus may be on other areas you must understand APIs to be able to debug and refactor when needed. We build in Node but you don't need previous experience so long as you are keen to learn.
