Full Job Description

As our Multi Sports Activity Worker you will work within the Sports Hall at Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone, and develop and deliver an exciting and varied programme which will engage and be inclusive for all young people and which embrace our TRY, TRAIN, TEAM philosophy. You will support community cohesion and provide an environment where members from diverse demographics and those with disabilities and additional support needs feel safe.

Alongside this you will carry out targeted outreach and partnership work across the borough to promote Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone and gain an understanding of the barriers to participation and work to overcome these.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Deliver a comprehensive sports programme for young people which will enable them to build their confidence. social skills and overall well-being.

  • Ensure that the sports delivery is high quality and engaging and meets the needs and interests of the young people.

  • Ensure the participation of young people and that their ideas contribute fully in the planning, delivery and evaluation of sessions, projects and activities.

  • To monitor, record and evaluate the sports programme using Youth Zones evaluations tools.

  • Ensure that staff, volunteers and young people comply with health and safety procedures and child protection legislation at all times.

  • In conjunction with other partners, identity, support and develop talented young performers.

  • Ensure that the members maintain a high standard of behaviour and discipline during sessions.

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people at all times.

  • Be an active member of the team and operate in line with the values and principles of Blackburn And Darwen Youth Zone.

  • Positively influence the general programme of events at the Youth Zone so it is attractive to young people from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by your line manager.

  • Work within the performance framework of Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone.

  • No complaints from parents regarding the service

  • Increase overall participation rates and ensure participation is representative of the demographics of Blackburn and Darwen.

    Education/Training/Qualifications

  • GCSEs or equivalent in literacy and numeracy (Essential)

  • Qualifications in the sporting field (Desirable)

  • Sports Coaching Qualification (Desirable)

  • First Aid (Desirable)


  • Experience:
  • Experience of delivering sporting activities to young people (Essential)

  • Proven experience in engaging vulnerable, disengaged or hard-to-reach youth people in sports activities (Desirable)

  • Experience of working with young people with additional needs and disabilities (Desirable)

  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating processes (Essential)

  • Ability to manage and organise several tasks at a time (Desirable)

  • Ability to motivate and engage staff, volunteers and young people through sessional work (Essential)

    Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone is a 21st century youth hub located at the heart of Blackburn and a dedicated site in Darwen, open to young people aged 5 to 25 years old, aiming to change the prospects offered to young people in the area. Our vision is to be at the heart of the community, collaborating to create a more cohesive and prosperous Blackburn and Darwen.


  • We are one of the leading youth organisations in Blackburn, with a membership of over 2,500 young people. We are open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year and offer over 40 different activities and opportunities in our open access youth club.

    Context of Role:

    Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone is an iconic, state-of-the-art facility for young people in the heart of Blackburn which opened in June 2012.

    The usual hours of work are Monday, Thursday and Saturday 6 - 9:30pm. Applicants can either work all these hours or there's flexibility to split the shifts between multiple applicants.

    Remuneration package

    Salary: Age related minimum wage

    Holidays: 33 days inclusive of 8 Bank Holidays (prorated for part time staff)

    Pension: Blackburn & Darwen Youth Zone operates a workplace pension scheme with Royal London for auto-enrolment purposes. You will contribute 5% of your gross earnings whilst the Youth Zone will contribute 3%. If you meet the criteria you will be auto-enrolled into the scheme within 3 months of commencement of your employment although you have the option to opt-out if you so wish.
