Full Job Description

The post is an appointment for 6 months initially with a possible further extension as a Clinical Fellow in Paediactic Surgery, ENT and Plastic's at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

Full time Clinical Fellow - equivalent to F2, CST1, CST2, level (Core Surgical Trainee) within the division of Surgical Care at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Exposure and experience in multiple or additional specialties located within the Trust may be possible and are subject to successful appointments.

The post holder will be allocated an educational supervisor who will act as an advisor and mentor. The posts offered are available for 6 months with the possibility of further extension to 12 months. The posts involve on-call commitments with out of hours supplements payable in accordance with the Trust's Terms and Conditions of Employment for Locally Employed Doctors. Applicants should have completed their Foundation Training (or equivalent).

Main duties of the job

The examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of acutely unwell surgical patients presenting through AED

To work as part of a Multidisciplinary Team.

Attendance at Outpatient clinics and theatre sessions.

Advice and clinical consultation to other inpatient services consistent with level of training and experience. Liaison with senior colleagues to ensure the provision of effective paediatric clinical services.

Teaching and training of medical students, junior staff (medical and nursing) within the department and wards.

Responsibility in respect of the reasonable and effective use of hospital and district resources.

Contribution to Clinical Governance activities in the Department such as audit. Participation in improvement initiatives in the Department e.g. implementation of National Guidance.

Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe's biggest and busiest children's hospitals providing care for over 200,000 children and young people each year.

It is one of only four stand-alone paediatric trusts in UK and is staffed by 2,800 employees. Alder Hey offers 20 specialist services including being the designated national centre for Craniofacial Surgery and a Centre of Excellence for Paediatric Oncology, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology and Orthopaedics.

It is a teaching hospital and trains 550 medical and 400 nursing students each year. A child and adolescent mental health service is also provided with an in-patient unit based at the Trust.

Recent expansion has seen the provision of additional theatres (there are 13 operating Theatres in total) and the opening of a new Neuro-sciences development. Alder Hey serves not only the children of Liverpool but is the tertiary referral centre for children from Merseyside, Cheshire, parts of Lancashire, Shropshire and North Wales for many sub-specialties of paediatrics.

The Trust provides a range of community services including school nursing, home carers and a child development centre. The hospital has over 300 beds, including day beds for surgery, a medical day care unit and Emergency Decision Unit. A purpose built Education Centre is situated on the hospital site and is available for all postgraduate educational activity.
