Full Job Description

We are looking for a Design Engineer to play a critical role in the development of new AI biomarkers for oncology.

This is a highly creative, fast-paced environment. Our teams are interdisciplinary, you will work alongside the machine learning and clinical science teams to design and build a rich interactive platform for the development and delivery of new AI tools.

We are an early stage company, you will have the opportunity to drive the strategic direction, lead on new projects and make an impact across the organisation. The successful candidate will be able to identify, build, and champion novel interface designs, tools across the company.,

  • Lead on full-stack development across tooling, web-platform and API design.

  • Design beautiful and thoughtful user interfaces and flows

  • Run user-centric design reviews with a focus on clinical, research and healthcare users

  • Create front-end component libraries which underpin expressive visualisations of complex, probabilistic and quantitative outputs

  • Collaborate closely with machine learning scientists, data engineers and clinicians to deliver on new projects

  • Integrate novel engineering and design work into our biomarker platform

  • Make critical full-stack design decisions taking into account user requirements and scale (e.g. rendering and user annotation of ultra-high resolution whole-slide-images)

  • Develop and implement these new design components, interfaces and tools through internal / external collaboration, We primarily work remotely with a strong emphasis on efficient processes to ensure high-quality work across asynchronous teams. However, we recognise the importance of sharing knowledge and building relationships with one another and find this easier to do when we spend time together in-person in Oxford or London. Therefore, we host regular team days from these locations.

  • Exceptional candidates who are willing to regularly (~1/mo) travel to the UK for in-person meetings will be considered. This generally restricts us to candidates based within ~3 hour travel time to London.

    As a team, we value:
  • Concise and engaging communication - we communicate clearly to work effectively in a remote setting.

  • Pride in high-quality work - we pay attention to detail and deliver to the highest standard.

  • A strategic approach - we think critically and creatively about complex issues. We identify the underlying patterns and leverage them to develop effective strategies

  • Collaborative co-creation - we are open to diverse perspectives, bounce ideas off of each other, and build upon each other's strengths.

Demonstrable experience building frontend technology and designing user interfaces

  • Expert in TypeScript, React or equivalent core front-end technologies and frameworks

  • At least three years industry experience in front end / UX / UI engineering, development and design or equivalent portfolio of work/projects

  • Experience working with Cloud Platforms, databases and APIs

  • Experience working both independently and as a part of a team environment, Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience in science, engineering and design

  • Experience with Data Visualisation in a biology or clinical context

  • Experience with our chosen flavour tech-stack (NextJS, Tailwind, Vercel, D3, SQL)

  • Familiarity with modern machine learning and AI methods

  • Experience working with scientists and data engineers on visual features, This is an excellent opportunity to join a rapidly growing start-up and make a real impact in the field of medical imaging and AI. If you are passionate about design, engineering, and AI and have a proven track record to match, we would love to hear from you.

GTL is a spinout from the University of Oxford that will transform oncology through an AI-first approach to spatial biology.

  • We are building on our exceptional, interdisciplinary team to translate leading academic research into impact in healthcare. As an early team member, you'll have the unique opportunity to help shape our journey and build on our principles of collaboration, focus, and invention.

We are on a mission to improve our understanding of disease and drive better patient outcomes through enhanced pathology. This is the new era of AI - you'll be working on creating a novel type of biomarker that will improve the lives of millions of patients.
