Full Job Description

  • Maintains control of all Tooling design & draughting processes & procedures.


  • To design and develop tooling and equipment for the manufacture/inspection & conformance testing of both existing products and new product introductions. This will include all supporting documentation i.e., calculations, limitations to use and work instructions where required.


  • Liaise with the Business Development, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Weld Engineering and Production and Production Support Departments to ensure best practice production techniques are implemented at both the quotation and design stages of new product/production processes.


  • Proactive liaison with Project Lead and other relevant departments to highlight and address any concerns that could potentially impact programme delivery.


  • Produce 3D CAD models and 2D detailed drawings in appropriate data formats.


  • Liaise with the appropriate departments to ensure all new tools are designed to be safe, ergonomically designed, appropriately risk assessed, compliant with necessary legislation and within known budget constraints.


  • Utilisation of Lean Tools & Techniques to promote and implement improvements to eliminate waste within current production processes/procedures.


  • In conjunction with the Manufacturing Engineering, Weld Engineering & Continuous Improvement Manager is responsible for ensuring that the New Product introduction process delivers a robust product utilising methods that are designed to reduce waste and are standardised where practicable.


  • Improve Product Quality, in conjunction with the Quality department, and guide trouble shooting of existing processes, non-conforming parts, fixtures, tooling and equipment.


  • Liaising with the Supply Chain department to ensure tooling/material acquisitions achieve economic value and delivered to required timescales.


  • Associated responsibilities:
  • Maintain positive proactive relationships with both internal/external departments, customers, suppliers, or others as appropriate to support the aims of the company for sustained efficiency improvements and long-term growth.


  • Maintain a high standard of health and safety within the department and ensure that all practices support the company's environmental and health and safety policies.


  • Ensure that all work activities and records comply with Company Policies, Procedures and Codes of Practice.

  • Practical Health and Safety awareness

  • A strong engineering background with a minimum of 2 years' industry experience working in product or tooling design


  • Experience in a similar position

  • Ability to understand technical drawings/specifications

  • Knowledge of maintenance and ownership of tools, jigs and fixtures


  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensions & Tolerances

  • Proficient knowledge of CAD drafting packages


  • Desirable
  • Tool validation & verification experience

  • Proficient knowledge of CMM processes & procedures


  • Qualifications and training

    Essential
  • Minimum of ONC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification


  • Desirable
  • Time served apprenticeship in toolmaking

  • Willingness to gain further qualifications as necessary
