Full Job Description

The Education Welfare Service carries out Calderdale's statutory duties in respect of ensuring that children attend school regularly and achieve their academic potential. The service undertakes a range of enforcement measures to support this aim.

The service also has responsibility for ensuring that children who are educated at home receive a suitable education, that all children who enter and leave Calderdale have a suitable education provision and licences child performances and issues Work Permits for school age children in part-time work.

To continue the work of this service, the Education Welfare Service are looking to recruit a Lead Officer for Elective Home Education. Within this role the successful applicant will ensure that the service delivers its core statutory responsibilities in respect of ensuring that all children who are home educated receive suitable education.

This can include difficult conversations and decisions on the use of statutory enforcement measures wherever the education provided is deemed to be unsuitable. The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring all our procedures comply with government legislation and guidance and will be required to provide a range of analytical reports that includes the narrative behind the data.

The role will involve directing the work of an Education Welfare Officer with a home education remit.

The successful candidate will be educated to degree standard ideally with a teaching or social care qualification or have significant experience of working with children and families in an education related setting.

They will be able to exercise authority and be able to present information to a high standard and be able to produce and deliver a range of reports to a wide range of audiences both within the authority and with a range of external partners and agencies.

Applicants to posts that are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act will require a DBS from the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed.
