Join AstraZeneca's Macclesfield Facilities Management team in a pivotal role that is instrumental in achieving our Campus goals for site environmental efficiency, including scope 1, 2 and 3. This role is a part of UK Operations and is responsible for providing a safe, sustainable, and reliable work environment for all functions based in Macclesfield. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in setting the strategic direction for environmental efficiency across a wide variety of activities, leading and coaching others to deliver science-led projects, and a hands-on approach to project delivery.,

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive science-led sustainability strategy to minimise environmental impacts in partnership with employees from across the Campus, and influencing the EMEA Region, and up to Global level.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate environment efficiency into development, manufacturing, and supply chain.

  • Guide the implementation of sustainable packaging solutions, waste reduction programs, energy and water efficiency measures driven by sound data gathering (metering, etc.).

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to manage key performance indicators (KPIs) and track progress towards sustainability goals.

  • Taking a leading role in developing NRF business cases, and coordinating from Global to Local, throughout project lifecycles, reporting cashflow and benefits realised.

  • Raise capabilities and competency across the Campus to deepen individual environmental ownership and accountability, making environment efficiency part of Business as usual.

  • Engage externally to bring best practice technology for solutions within the organisation.

  • Report and communicate progress to Campus, Regional and Global Leadership.

  • Ensure that sustainability improvements are reaching their maximum impact through regular on-site presence and process confirmation.

  • Direct new initiatives and improvement programmes aimed at ensuring AstraZeneca sustainability goals are met.

    Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience

  • Significant experience in sustainability or in roles such as production / operations, research, and development (R&D), facilities, quality, or similar fields within the pharmaceutical or healthcare sector

  • Track record of successfully developing and implementing strategies and initiatives

  • Excellent project management skills, including prioritization, timeline management, and budget adherence

  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and emerging sustainability trends in the pharmaceutical sector

  • Proficient in analysing complex data sets related to sustainability performance forecasting

  • Proven communicator who works effectively across the organization and externally to achieve outcomes. Forward-thinking mindset, passion, and learning acumen to adapt to evolving sustainability challenges and opportunities

  • Proven leadership experience in a matrix environment, both within organisation and with external stakeholders

  • Comfortable with managing risk and ambiguous situations


  • Desirable Skills/Experience:
  • Familiarity with circular economy principles and strategies for promoting resource efficiency and waste reduction and applying science-based sustainable principles to new environments.

  • Knowledge of sustainable supply chain management, including responsible sourcing and supplier engagement.

  • Understanding of environmental justice and social equity issues, integrating them into sustainability practices.

  • Experience in quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and developing strategies for environment efficiency.

  • Familiarity with sustainability frameworks and initiatives, such as: ISO 14001, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
